Pony ranges

Ponies can be notoriously tricky to saddle fit - even finding a saddle that is small enough can be a challenge!

It’s just as important that small ponies get saddle checks and back checks as often as any other horse - at least every 6 months - as they change shape over the seasons. Badly fitting saddles can still cause soreness and muscle atrophy, resulting in hollows behind the shoulders, and saddles that are too long (a common problem with short backed ponies) often cause behavioural issues such as bucking and napping.

Pony Saddles

Pony saddles can be particularly tricky to find - and it’s important that the saddle fits the pony, and the rider. Making sure there is room for children’s legs to grow, and still have support from a correctly placed knee block is really important to ensure that everyone feels secure, safe and balanced. It’s also really important to have a saddle with the correct width of panel that is going to have a wide enough gullet to give your pony space over his spinal processes. Girthing options and tree type can also be key to making sure a saddle stays put without slipping forwards on those flatter backed/no wither types.

I will work with you to find the best fit for both pony and rider, and will advice on both new and second-hand options.

Pony bit fitting

Both Trust Bits and Neue Schule offer a good range of pony bits. The Trust sweet iron pony bits are neat and have a good range of cheeks and mouthpieces, and come in sizes from 4” upwards. The Neue Schule Perfomance Pony range offer the same carefully designed angled mouthpieces, in a smaller, neater size.
